I stopped by Touchdown, the new sports bar at the old MoMo’s space on U street, last night. They are open for business today. Touchdown is on two floors (as of now, they have a third floor that hasn’t opened yet) with tons of flatscreen TVs (I counted over 15) and a pretty basic beer and bar food menu. I had a few of the appetizers they were serving last night, and while none were amazing, all were pretty good. If you stop by, tell me what you think in the comments.

Kind of sounds like a rehash of what was there previously, minus the African food: a new restaurant and sports bar are coming to the old Cafe Nema/MoMo’s spot at 1334 U Street. Touchdown, a sports bar will open on the top level with the Codmother, a fish joint to be on the bottom level. Rumors are that the brothers behind Tabaq Bistro next door are opening this new joint. Well Michael Fonseca, a D.C. attorney, is the name on the permits so that doesn’t tell us much. I’ll keep an eye out on progress and keep you updated.

Via Aaron Morrissey, the editor in chief of DCist, there’s word that the rumor is true: Cafe Nema and MoMo’s are closing next Monday, the 11thTuesday, the 12th. They have signs on the door. Bummer. No word on what will be replacing these spaces. I encourage everyone to stop by and visit these places before they’re gone for good.

Cafe Nema is one of the pioneers of the revitalization of U street, it opened in 1995. With the loss of Cafe Nema, we’re losing what U street has been.

MoMo’s had been open since 2007, and is a popular sports bar.

Here’s the buzz about restaurants in the neighborhood:

  • Borderstan has the scoop on two new restaurants coming to 14th street: work has started on Standard (14/S) the burger joint opening in the former Garden District space. Also, a coming soon sign has been put up on the Peregrine spot (14/R).
  • Prince of Petworth posted this rumor (in capital letters, nothing is confirmed) that Cafe Nema and MoMo’s (13/U), who reside in the same converted rowhouse, might be closing Tuesday. He didn’t have any information about why or for what. So, take this scuttlebutt with a grain of salt. I certainly wouldn’t want to see these places close.
  • Tom Sietsema has the scoop on Jeff Black’s new restaurant, Pearl Dive, coming to 14/Corcoran. The spot will have a bocce court (new it thing?) and serve seafood stew, po boys, pasta, and fried chicken. ETA is Valentine’s Day 2011.
  • Justin Rude of the Going Out Gurus had nice things to say about the New Orleans-tinted Desperado’s (13/U). I have to go soon. It’s on the list!
  • 14thandYou talks about the possibility of the Saloon leaving its location at 12th and U because of disputes with the liquor licensing board.
