Progress at soon-to-be Piola

We learned back in April that Piola, a pizzeria, would be coming to a long vacant building at 14th and Florida. Recently, we’ve seen a lot of progress: we have a window and a door. While I haven’t heard when the outpost plans to open, I look forward to another pizza option in the neighborhood.

CrossFit Praxis Coming Soon

CrossFit Praxis is coming to the empty building at 14th and Florida, the space which recently hosted a BYT party. I know a lot of people are fans of CrossFit workouts, so glad to see another exercise option come to the hood. Their website tells me they plan to have a 6400 square foot facility. You can sign up by November 15 and get a discounted membership, but no word on when they will be opening. I will update if I hear more.

Mercadito Ramos closed

Well this is a bummer. Mercadito Ramos, a Latin grocery store on 14th between Florida and W, was a great place to stop in for cheap produce and Latin ingredients. It appears to have completely closed about a week ago. The take out place next door closed and reopened a few blocks away a few months ago – which makes me wonder if there is development slated for the building they both resided in.

However, I haven’t heard any word on developing that address, though there are condos slated to go in the lot at 14th and Florida and of course there is the YMCA development next door at 14th and W.

BYT Pop Up, Coming here

In case you missed my coverage of Brightest Young Thing’s pop up on DCist, they will be opening an anti-pop-up pop up starting Thursday and running through June 17 at the vacant retail space located at 2213-2217 14th St. NW, where George’s Carry Out, as well as an old DDOT office used to be.

What will the space encompass? Much like BYT itself, it will feature art, music, and booze. They’ve booked synth-pop brothers Bluebrain, DJ Chris Burns, local electro-pop band Painted Face, and rapper Rye Rye. Additionally, Art Whino’s international arts event, the G40 Summit, will be a part of the space takeover, showcasing work from a few dozen artists. There will be live music, fashion events, art talks, standup comedy, etc. mostly for free or on the cheap.

We Love DC is reporting that Julia Bachleitner, the woman who was hit by a drunk driver last week in Adams Morgan, has died. Ms. Bachleitner was 26 and a native of Austria. She was a student at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. This is horrible news, my thoughts are with her friends and family.

Du Vin Osteria coming

Du Vin Osteria, a wine bar that will be serving small plates, cheese, and charcuterie, will be opening on 14th and Florida. The wine bar will also have sidewalk seating. It will be opening in the Solea building. Now, I might be among a few that are thinking “really? another wine bar?” but I am also glad to see retail come to this part of 14th street. No ETA on the place, yet Du Vin Osteria’s Facebook page indicates it will be open in summer of 2010.

Pica Taco coming

As I reported two weeks ago, we now have a sign confirming that Pica Taco is coming to the old LZ Restaurant space. As Prince of Petworth reported, there is a Pica Taco in Mt. Pleasant and it has gotten some very positive reviews from a number of outlets. So I’m getting pretty excited, and hoping it opens soon.

LZ Restaurant closed

PoP posted last week that he feared LZ Restaurant was closed, and unfortunately he’s right. I had noticed when I walked by that they weren’t often open, but the seemed to be open weird hours anyway. I did some Internet searching and found a website saying that while the restaurant closed (apparently in December) the owners would continue to do catering. To confirm that the restaurant was closed, I tried their number (202-745-0416) to find out the line was disconnected. So, sadly, I have to conclude they closed.
