The Gibson always puts on good events so I’m happy to tell you about a new monthly art series they are hosting called Art Crimes. The first installation, tonight starting at 6:30, will feature a custom cocktail menu and savory food pairings with DJ SoulCall Paul spinning 50s and 60s soul. The event has no cover charge.

This installation will feature art from DC-based photographer Sam Vasfi, presenting his series of photographs called Flâneur. The series is a collection of photographs from both Paris and Chartres, a small town outside of Paris. The photographs will be on sale and on exhibit on the 2nd floor of the bar until the next Art Crimes series next month.

There are two excellent art events happening in the ‘hood this weekend, try to check out at least one or both:

  • Mental Map by Ted Milligan (courtesy of Plan B)

Activation 2719 – which we’ve talked about before, is finally happening this Saturday from 6-11 pm. RSVP online here. I’m doing my best to go (have dinner plans) and if so will report back later about the show.

  • The opening reception for Plan B’s February Exhibition featuring paintings by Ted Milligan is happening this Saturday from 6-8 pm. The show also features photographs by Charlie Gaynor, Juditha, and David Young. The reception will feature the artists and light refreshments. The exhibit will be open through March 7th.

What are you doing on New Year’s? Need some ideas? I’ve compiled a pretty long list of events on U street if you need some ideas of how to ring in the New Year:

Know of any other special New Year’s events on U street? Let me know in the comments.

Um, how amazingly fun does this sound? The Air Guitar National Finals are this Friday, 8 pm at the 9:30 Club. Tickets are $20 to watch 25 finalists compete to be the US champion of all things Air Guitar. The champion will then move on to represent the US in the World championship in Finland next week. There is not one, but two air guitarists from DC competing on Friday.

This is the kind of total oddball fun event that I love, it sounds like it will be a great time. First: who doesn’t love a little air guitar? Second: these guys have to be good if they’re competing in the National championship. So, it’s talented air guitaring. After learning about it I’m totally going, and I had to share. It guarantees to be a good time.
