Ben's Next Door's new sign

Ben's Next Door's new sign

I love the Internet. Via Flickr, Schmap, the online guide website, found my photo of Ben’s Next Door’s new sign. They asked my permission to include it in consideration for their new edition of their Washington guide, and I consented. Well it won, and is now one of the photos for the Shaw/U Street neighborhood. Sweet!

Check it out here.

Half smoke benedict

Half smoke benedict

I noticed last weekend that while Ben’s Next Door was advertising that they were showing March Madness games, and they were also serving brunch. Score! I went in on Sunday and was thrilled to see an awesome, chili/half smoke inspired brunch menu. The food was great, my companions and I tried the half smoke benedict, Ben’s omelet, and the Belgian waffles. We liked it all. My one food complaint were the eggs in the benedict were a little over cooked for me, there were no runny yolks.

The other problem was, and the waiter/manager noted this, the food did take a while to come out. They’re still working out the kinks, and I don’t think they had enough people working there to get the food out in a quick manner. But the food was great. Thumbs up for that. And I confirmed that they’ll continue brunch after March Madness is over.

Finally, Uncle Brutha's!

Finally, Uncle Brutha's!

I had noticed that Ben’s Next Door served my favorite hot sauce, by Uncle Brutha’s, which immediately earned the restaurant credibility in my book. However, when I recently ran out of my supply, I beleaguered the fact that I couldn’t find another hot sauce that stood up to it, and was having trouble locating the stuff since their store closed at Eastern Market. Then I saw PoP’s post on Uncle Brutha’s, saying they’d opened a temporary store in Adams Morgan. Great! However, I walked over there and it turns out the temporary store has closed. Sizing up my options and considering buying on the Internet, I saw that Uncle Brutha’s website had been updated to tell me that Next Door not only serves their hot sauce, they sell it as well.

Score!

I went in after work today, to stock up on my Uncle Brutha’s. I don’t think anyone else had come in to buy it, but they were helpful and courteous as they got the sauce and wrung me up. So hot sauce fiends, here’s a tip: buy your Uncle Brutha’s at Next Door.
