Some news regarding the violence in Columbia Heights:
- An arrest was made in the murder of Paul Jones, the suspect is being charged with murder in the second degree. Jones was murdered three weeks ago on the 13oo block of Columbia Road. Lafonte Lurie Carlton, the suspect, was also charged with another murder, that of Derrell Goins on December 10th at Champlain and Kalorama Road NW.
- I don’t want to bury the lead here, so here’s another important wrinkle to this story: the WaPo reports that Carlton pleaded guilty to a murder as a juvenile in 2006 and some how got out of jail in 2 years. Now that’s a failing of our juvenile detention system right there.
- The homeless man who was assaulted on Tuesday night has died of the injuries he sustained during the attack. Two suspects have already been arrested, charged with aggravated assault. I expect the charges will change to murder.
I’m glad that MPD seems to be doing such a good job making timely arrests on these murders. However, I’m sure many share the sentiment that I wish there were no murders to solve.
